Rising Temperatures

During cold and freezing the beneficial bacteria will die back, and not convert that much ammonia.  That’s okay, the fish stop eating below 50 or so degrees.  I couldn’t get them to eat until 55-60.  So having the system die back a little was okay. From Jan 13 2013 to April 14 2013 you can see an increase in fish tank tempature, as well as inside greenhouse temp.  After 4/14 I had some issues, and didn’t grab data.  The SD... Read More

New Controller 2.0 coming on line.

It’s been a few months since our last post. It’s now middle of winter, and my prior arduino controller stopped working. So I decided to switch to Raspberry PI, where my IT background would be much better suited for. Here is screen shot of our main TV with the dashboard displaying  Read More

New temp sensor

This new sensor was built on this past Sunday. It was way to hot to work in the greenhouse. The temp reading was around 5pm. This is using the Dallas DS18D20, and a 4 character 7 segment display. I’ll be able to add additional temp sensors on the same pin. The next step is to make this work via xbee, which will later be replaced by wiFly (wifi radio that fits in xbee Breakout. Tuesday.. in the greenhouse we got up to 106.6. Logs/charts will... Read More

New controller 1.8

Currently on revision 1.8 of our greenhouse and eventually aquaponics monitor and automation controller. We finally got our first shield done.. and its being put to test in our greenhouse/walk-in cold frame. The shield was created so there is no accidental pulling of wires.. which has happened alot. While we work on getting the stats online we can test this live.  Exciting day in aquaponics land Also took a video to explain a bit more.. and will... Read More

Greenhouse Controller 1.0

Update on controller Here is a new video and the schematics to understand the wiring mess.   And for those of you interested in all the wiring, here you go. Greenhouse Controller 0.1 On the bad side, I burnt or shorted out my second arduino controller.  I am going to replace the chip in the one and try to reprogram a surface mount with USBtinyISP from adafruit.com. I have no idea what I am doing with this, but it sure is a fun learning experience.... Read More

New Greenhouse

Before you ask, this greenhouse does not contain an aquaponics system. It houses our organic raised beds. We decided to build a greenhouse for our beds as an experiment to better understand the mechanics of a greenhouse operation. We intended to build one first for our outdoor aquaponics system, however there is a lot of ground work that needs to happen before hand. Secondly, we already had established plants we wanted to see how long we could extend. Also... Read More

Greenhouse Planning

Now that fall is just around the corner, it’s time to work on a greenhouse plans. This is going to be a 12′ x 32′ x 7′ hoop greenhouse. I just got the pipe bender from Johnny seeds at a 40% off of normal price.  It is nice waiting till the end of the season.  See what’s new 2011 post Here is the manual for the High Hoop bender Here is a link to the google doc worksheet to see the total costs we are looking at, and... Read More
